The World Languages Department provides students with the tools to communicate in a second language in the global community.To achieve this goal, students are taught using increasingly more of the target language in the classroom with the majority of classroom instruction is conducted in the target language by the third year. Emphasis is placed on student expressive and receptive skills: both both oral and written production as well as the development of listening and reading comprehension.All classes expose students to the varied cultures of the people who use the language they are learning, and they are taught to respect and appreciate cultural differences.
The intent of this course is to enable students to communicate on a basic level within the Deaf community using entry level knowledge of American Sign Language. This will be developed and achieved through use of voices off lectures, basic expressive and receptive practice, small group activities, videos and approved websites. Fingerspelling, base vocabulary, grammatical points, forms of expression, idioms, hearing science, and Deaf culture are emphasized. Deaf culture includes the history of deafness, contemporary issues and society’s ways of dealing with deafness, the history of signs around the world and the history of American Sign Language.

ASL III offers an in-depth study of American Sign Language and Deaf culture that prepares students to go into entry level college courses well prepared and with ability to comfortably socialize, voices off, in the Deaf community. This year long course is to teach students to actively build upon their previous levels of American Sign Language. The students will come to understand the grammatical structure of ASL, expand their vocabulary and better communicate in the Deaf world. They will continue developing their skills to better comprehend and express themselves at an advancing level. ASL 3 Honors meets the World Language Content Standards for California Schools in recognizing that American Sign Language courses provide a rich linguistic heritage that also includes the unique social and cultural aspects of the Deaf community. In this Honors level course, students will earn ASL Honor Society membership by engaging in teacher-led service learning, Deaf art and ASL literature competitions.

Fluency and accuracy of fingerspelling will be developed as well as the use of lexicalized signs. In addition, students will continue to refine their knowledge of the D/deaf community and Deaf culture. Other relevant topics will be addressed.

The goal of this course is to refine students’ ability to communicate effectively in French in the four skill areas: speaking, listening, reading, and writing. By the end of the course, the students will be able to narrate in various tenses, describe, give an opinion, and defend it in French. The students will develop listening skills through classroom conversation and the use of audio and videos that focus on the variety of language and accents in the francophone world. which will enable students to understand people whose native language is French. The students’ reading skills will improve as many different kinds of reading materials are analyzed, including literature from various Francophone authors. Writing practice will focus on idiomatic French in order to produce organized texts according to AP guidelines, and in-depth study of culture will enable students to express their appreciation and knowledge of cultural differences and similarities in the francophone world.

Areas of study will also include spelling problems, the use of accents, the structure of language, and the identification and uses of tenses and parts of speech. The course is thematically organized and incorporates Spanish literature from a variety of cultures.

AP Spanish Literature is equivalent to a college level introductory survey course of literature written in Spanish. Students continue to develop their interpretive, interpersonal, and presentational skills in Spanish as well as critical reading and analytical writing as they explore short stories, novels, plays, essays, poetry and other texts by Hispanic authors from Spain, Latin America, and the United States .

This course emphasizes development of skills necessary for group discussion, dialogue, and individual oral presentations on topics pertaining to everyday life, current issues and events, and social problems. This course is conducted entirely in Spanish, and students are expected to speak only Spanish in the classroom.
